The Elf on the Shelf tradition started in 2005, started by stay-at-home-mother, Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Each elf comes with a story book based on the Scandinavian tradition where a family has an elf who watches and reports back to Santa each night, coming back to hide around the house in the morning.
