After seven years of volleyball, senior Molly Marteney has found herself preparing for college. Marteney plans to continue playing volleyball and extend her love for the sport into college, becoming a volleyball coach and a personal trainer.
“I’ll be getting my sports studies degree, and there are a lot of options after that. A lot of gyms will let anyone become a personal trainer to get experience, and you can very easily work your way up,” Marteney said. “I would want to start out coaching club, which is high school to middle school girls, and see where it takes me from there.”
Marteney continues to work on grades, sports and spending time with her friends and family.

“It’s difficult balancing school, sports, work and social life, all those aspects of things,” Marteney said. “I’m always proud of my 3.9 GPA.”
The love of volleyball began for Marteney in 5th grade after a recommendation from her mom.
“I had pretty much done every other sport; I have no idea why I wanted to play volleyball because I’m a very cautious person,” Marteney said. “After I started playing, I went to a WSU game for the first time, and it was really awesome. I really liked being able to see that there are places for short girls. I fell in love with it after that.”
Volleyball being such a key part of Marteney’s life led to multiple favorite memories of games, practices and friendships.
“One of my favorite memories is from my junior year club season. We were at a tournament in Oklahoma; we went three and zero the first day, and we beat the number one-seated team,” Marteney said. “They were really cocky; they were really rude to us the first day, and we crushed them. It was really awesome.”
Marteney focuses on being herself and encouraging others to do the same.
“Stay true to yourself; you can’t control what other people do, but you can control how you are in every situation,” Marteney said.
