My freshman year of high school, I felt terrified and intimidated. I was 14 years old, and the upperclassmen scared me because of how mature they seemed. I could have never imagined that I would be here right now, wishing for one more year in high school.
The journey that high school has taken me on has been bumpy to say the least. The ups and downs I experienced were definitely stepping stones for me, and joining the newspaper was a big stepping stone.
I joined the newspaper staff second semester of my junior year due to my friend, senior Emily Brinkley, pressuring me to. That decision was the best one I ever made. The community I built with this staff is beyond what I believed I could. I was scared that joining so late would lead to me being awkward with everyone, but they welcomed me with open arms. For that, I am forever grateful.
High school is built on clubs and activities, and I am so glad I decided to join art club, newspaper and drumline. These activities led me to become a responsible and honest leader.
I look forward to moving on in my life and attending Wichita State University, but I will miss all the things that high school has taught me and the friendships it has given me.
If I had any advice for upcoming freshmen, it would be to never take advantage of where you are now. Make the memories and live in the moment.
With love, Harley Williams
