The bowling team has started their season, and players feel excited and confident after the first few practices. With a mix of new bowlers and experienced bowlers, the team is working and bonding along the way.
Freshman Arlo Gehlen is bowling for the first time. Even though he was nervous at first, he quickly felt more comfortable once practice started.
“I was pretty scared at first,” Gehlen said, “I was with a big group of freshmen, so I got my confidence back.”
Gehlen encouraged others to participate by highlighting how enjoyable and approachable the activity is.
“I’d encourage others to join because you get to bowl for free for two hours,” Gehlen said,” It’s really fun and not that hard.”
Along with the new bowlers, the team also has experienced players, including senior Luis Alvarado. Alvarado has bowled every year but his junior year.
“The team bonding is my favorite out of all the years I’ve bowled.” Alvarado said.
As Alvarado’s last season approaches, he has set goals for himself.
“I want to score above at least 150 every game and get a lot of strikes,” Alvarado said.
Another new team member, freshman Cheyenne Alderman, says it’s fun to just get out of the house.
“I felt lost at first, but the team welcomed me like family.” Alderman said.
Senior Kendra Gresham, who has bowled for the school for four years, feels this season is different from the past years in a good way.
“We actually have a full girls team this year,” Gresham said. “We have never had that before.”
Gresham has been helping new bowlers feel more comfortable offering simple, encouraging tips during practice. She gives feedback that helps beginners build confidence and improve their skills.
“Our girls team has bonded a lot and we have really welcomed all the new bowlers.”
Leading the team is head coach Mathew Pickarts, who is in his second year of coaching. Pickarts has over 30 years of bowling experience and wants to pass that knowledge on to athletes.
“ I wanted to coach bowling to share what I’ve learned and keep the sport going,” Pickarts said.
Pickarts believes the girls team has a strong chance of returning to state this season, while the boys team continues to grow with many new faces. His main advice to bowlers is to stay confident.
“It’s just a game,” Pickarts said. “Take it one ball at a time.”
