The United States launched a surprise military operation against Venezuela that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife on the morning of Jan. 3.
This operation, called Operation Absolute Resolve, involved U.S. forces carrying out airstrikes and special operations in Caracas. Maduro was taken into custody and transported to New York to face federal charges.
U.S. President Donald Trump received mixed reactions from people around the world because of his actions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a supporter of Trump’s decision. However, the Chinese government is not.
“China is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the use of force by the U.S. against a sovereign country and the use of force against the president of a country,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, according to a reuters.com article
People believe the U.S. should not have interfered, but Some People think the U.S. actions are justified.
“Congratulations, President Donald Trump for your bold and historic leadership on behalf of freedom and justice. I salute your decisive resolve and the brilliant action of your brave soldiers,” Netanyahu said, according to Reuters.
Venezuela sits on the world’s largest oil reserve. The oil is estimated at over 300 billion barrels. Trump has said the U.S. will temporarily control Venezuela.
“We will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Some legislators think the president went too far and acted without congressional approval. Others say it was the right move to stop a dictatorship. Both political parties debate the amount of power the president should have to start military actions.
With Maduro gone, former vice president Delcy Rodríguez stepped in as acting president, but the people of Venezuela are worried about their future, and the country is split.
