Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a growing community where students gather to share faith and build friendships.
¨I enjoy that we have an opportunity to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ during the school day”. FCA sponsor J.D. Hand said.
Although it is called Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the club is open to all students, regardless of their athletic participation or religious background. FCA meetings include student-led devotionals, games, snacks and opportunities for students to grow in their faith and confidence.
“Everybody is welcome,” said Hand, “whether you’re a Christian or not.¨
Hand, along with fellow sponsors counselor Janae Mettling and math teacher Sammi Cosby, helps organize the meetings with students.
“I am one of the teacher sponsors that helps organize things and gets the announcements put in,” Hand said. “We also talk to students who we think might be good leaders and help them with ideas for future meetings.”
Juniors Ellasyn Mettling and Kaylee Cox serve on the FCA leadership team. Their roles involve helping plan meetings, greeting members, leading games and prayer and sometimes delivering devotionals.
“We meet every other Thursday to plan the next meeting,” Ellasyn said. “Our specific roles during the meetings vary because we assign them during the leadership meetings.”
For both leaders, FCA has been more than just a club; it’s been a chance to grow personally and spiritually.
“FCA helped me get connected when I first got here,” Cox said.
There will be a trunk or treat booth for FCA in the parking lot of the high school on October 29, 6-8 p.m. There’s a get-together at the Cox Barn.
“The next meeting is on October 30th,” Janae said.
Whether students attend meetings for faith or fun, FCA offers a space where students can be themselves, explore their faith and support one another.
“Make sure you get a pass and show up,” Hand said. “That’s all it takes.”
