“Did you hear who hit Jay’s car in the parking lot?”
Conversations about events happen often, before and after school and at lunch. Sometimes, talk like this is not harmful to the person who is the topic of the conversation.
Gossiping is a broad term; the meaning of gossiping has a wide variety of meanings and means something different to everyone. To me, gossip is talking about events or people; the conversation is private, and anything said is something I would be okay with being said about me.
During school, I commonly discuss events that happened throughout the day. Often, I discuss these topics with my friends nicely and funnily. Gossiping like this is not a negative talk, but a fun way to discuss events and people.
Gossip can have negative effects on emotions, confidence and self-esteem. People often think gossip is a rumor, but rumors are something untrue being purposefully spread across a group of people. Drama is another word often confused with gossip, drama is a situation causing people to break off from one another.
However, gossiping for me is not often in a negative way. I would not say anything inappropriate about someone that would seriously hurt their feelings or confidence. Often, gossiping is having a fun conversation about something that has happened that isn’t meant to be spread to more than friends.
While in school, I found gossiping to be common among all ages. According to PsychPlus, gossiping can be a bonding moment between friends, building connections and having a fun conversation. Discussing people, relationships and friends is a vital part of being a girl in high school.
