After five years without an album, rapper Playboi Carti has returned with a new album, “Music”. Carti has been hyping up this album for years and set to drop it multiple times but never did. Finally on March 14, 2025 “Music” was released, and it is interesting, to say the least.
“Music” has a whopping 30 tracks and is 76 minutes long. This album does not have enough diversity to warrant a tracklist that long. Carti has also released a deluxe album that adds four more songs to this already stretched tracklist, which is a little too much.
Carti put a couple of good songs on this album that make it somewhat fun to listen to, but it is apparent that Carti became so used to featuring on other songs that it is now hard for him to make a good one on his own. So many of the best songs on “Music” are with other artists including “Philly” with fellow rapper Travis Scott, and “Rather Lie” with singer The Weeknd. Often, these songs sound like a Scott song or a Weeknd song with a Carti feature. Only a couple of good songs on here that feature Carti alone and are memorable in any way.
One of these songs is the infamous “Evil Jordan.” This song has been leaked for years on the internet, and fans wanted an official release all that time. The leaked version is not bad at all; the beat is nice, and Carti provides a smooth rap cadence on top of it, but the official release version of this song is where the problems start. Carti decided to add over a minute to the beginning of this song, which builds into a loud gunshot, resulting in one of the worst beat drops I have ever heard.
Another complaint about this album is that Carti is often hard to understand. What separates a good rapper from an okay rapper is how they present their writing. One of the biggest points non-Carti fans make is to “rap one bar from the album from memory.” This is difficult because Carti makes it hard to understand, let alone remember anything he says. I know I sound like an old guy listening to rap for the first time, but it’s really how I feel about this.
Overall, this album is a disappointment after a long, five-year wait for the album. It is filled with mediocre songs with only two or three standouts. This album is a whole lotta mid 5.0/10.
