During the 2025 Grammy Awards, singer Billie Eilish’s album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” lost all six of the categories it was nominated in. One of these categories was Album of the Year, which she lost to Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter,” which completely snubbed Eilish of the award. I thought the academy made a terrible choice with this decision. This inspired me to review this album because it is by far the best album on the list of nominees.
From start to finish, this album is filled with great songs, one of which is “Lunch.” The song begins with a distorted drumbeat that makes the groove set in immediately. The major theme of this album is Eilish coming out as bisexual and letting her feelings toward other women be known. This song perfectly expresses these feelings.
Another standout song is “Birds of a Feather.” This is easily my favorite song on the album; it is also the most catchy. Eilish delivers an outstanding vocal performance that perfectly encapsulates her emotions throughout the song. The melodic elements are unmatched, and if I had to recommend one song for you to listen to, this would be the one.
I do not have any issues with this album at all, some songs are not as good as others, but none of them are bad at all. One of my biggest issues with albums nowadays is how similar the songs sound to one another or bloated tracklists that seem like they drag on forever. My favorite part of this album is how every song sounds intentional and independent from one another. The songs on the album are different and do not make you feel like you are listening to the same song on repeat. This album sits at around 45 minutes in run time, but it makes it feel like 20 while listening.
Overall, this is my pick for the 2025 Album of the Year, and I give it a 9/10.
