Rapper Doechii burst onto the rap scene with her new album “Alligator Bites Never Heal”. This album mixes throwback beats and clever rhymes that show Doechii’s talent.
I can see a huge comparison between Doechii and Kendrick Lamar. Their sounds can sound very similar to one another. This is especially true with the song “Hide N Seek”. This song is very similar to Lamar, to the chanting in the chorus and the flow in the verse, but it is not all like Lamar. Doechii shows her singing abilities, which work perfectly with the low-key beat.
Another standout song is “Denial Is A River”. This song gives a masterclass in telling stories with lyrics. The focus of this song is Doechii talking and going through her recent love life with a therapist alter-ego. This story effortlessly weaves through smart rhymes and flows that make it easy to understand.
The songs on this album are full of beats that feel like they came from a decade ago with boom-bap drums and proficient bass lines that make the songs feel in the pocket.
One issue with this album is that the tracklist feels a little bloated. The tracklist consists of 19 songs most of which are under three minutes. This makes me feel like the songs lack content and rips me out of a song right when I start to feel it.
Another issue I have with this album is that the songs lack replay value. Even though I like the songs, you would not catch me going back to listen to them very much. The good songs shine well, but they are mixed with a bunch of others that hold them down.
In the end, this album is full of great songs with great rhymes. I give this album a 7.5/10.
