“What the sigma” is a phrase heard throughout the school. Students and staff either hate the new humor within the current generation or they hate it.
Math teacher Garrett Belknap has the idea that the current generation’s humor stems from the desire to have a positive outlook on the future.
“When you have a more dire outlook on the future,” Belknap said. “Then you look for more of a comic relief to release that discomfort of; this is the world we live in. This is the future that we have to look for.”
Belknap has the feeling that the different generations see things differently due to the older generations being raised differently than the younger generations.
“A lot of it’s just the idea that the younger generation is constantly being told this is the worst generation, and generations are getting worse,” Belknap said. “When you’re constantly being told, this is not the America that these older generations grew up in.”
Freshman Clara Standefer has a different perspective on why generations see things differently.
“If you’re older and you’ve been through more generations, you’ve seen more,” Standefer said. “If you’re younger, you wouldn’t have seen as much. They wouldn’t know as much.”
Standefer feels that just because people might not agree with specific senses of humor, does not mean they cannot be friends because of it.
“Some people will think that something is funny and some people won’t, and it’s okay that something is different,” Standefer said. “Me and someone else can see things differently and still be friends.“
English teacher Tim Laner believes that a large part of the differences in humor between generations comes from the media.
“A large part of it comes from the media,” Laner said. “A large part of it comes from the movies, and I’d say that’s a major portion.”
Junior Addison Robinson thinks that different types of humor should be seen a certain way in a school setting.
“We’re supposed to be mature in the school, if it’s outside of school, fine because you’re just joking around,” Robinson said. “Older people were in different generations, so they might not think it’s okay, or funny compared to us.”
