Room 312 is a familiar place for social studies teacher Taylor Cusick.
She graduated from Augusta High School in 2018 and fell in love with history her junior year. Her classroom is the same room where her passion started.
“I always knew teaching was something I was passionate about,” Cusick said.
Cusick’s first teaching job was in Baxter Springs, Kans. Her contact with students at other schools differed from her experiences with the Orioles.
“The students are very friendly and hard-working. “They usually come to me and try to get their assignments,” Cusick said. ”I’m pretty impressed by their ability to self-regulate.”
Cusick uses an interactive teaching style. She wants to give her students more control over the learning process.
“I like to interact with the kids, and I want them to interact with each other,” Cusick said. “I think that develops a better understanding.”
As the year progressed, interactions with her students began to improve.
“My first year, I was definitely very stressed, and it was a time where I thought, maybe I can’t do this profession,” Cusick said. “As the year shifts, I have learned to enjoy the ups and downs a lot more.”
Cusick wants to continue improving her teaching style and stay consistent.
Outside of school, she likes to crochet and golf with her husband. At home, she has a dog and two cats.
