Former NFL running back for the Chargers and Steelers brings his experience to the high school gridiron.
Assistant football coach and behavioral liaison Dreamius Smith started playing football in little league before moving to hitting the field at Wichita Heights High School.
“I left Heights and went to KU, then left there and went to Butler [Community College],” Smith said. “[I] played at Butler for two seasons, then transferred from there and finished college at West Virginia University.”
After graduating from West Virginia University, Smith was drafted by the NFL.
“I played professionally for five and a half years. I gave everything I had,” Smith said. “When it was time for me to make the decision not to play anymore, there was no hesitation.”
Smith’s career was cut short due to a severe concussion. He retired from the NFL in 2019. From 2019 to the spring of 2024, he was a football coach at Wichita Heights High School then Butler Community College. Smith received a call about a job opportunity from good friend and head football coach Dawson Elliott.
“Once he heard that I was back on the market, that call got made,” Smith said. “I would be a fool not to have accepted the job.“
Smith coaches the running backs, and during the day he serves as the social behavior liaison. To Smith, the two positions go hand in hand.
“It teaches me to deal with kids that may need more help catching onto things,” Smith said. “Some kids can’t catch onto plays like other kids.”
Smith is excited to be a part of the staff.
“I wouldn’t have taken the job if I had any other mindset,” Smith said. “I’m glad I took the job, and I hope I’m here for a while.”
