Algebraic equations, calculus and math in general may scare most people, but a new math teacher is comfortable teaching the topic and educating students about the commonly scary subject.
Prior to coming to Augusta to teach, math teacher Sammi Cosby taught at Emporia.
“I taught at Emporia State University as a graduate assistant for two and a half years,” Cosby said. “Then I was a substitute teacher, but this is my first high school job.”
Cosby chose to teach math because of her love of the subject and being able to help people.
“Since I was really little, I’ve been good at math and really enjoyed it because of that,” Cosby said. “I found that a lot of people don’t enjoy math because they’re not good at it, and I like getting to watch as people learn math, so then they can begin to enjoy it as well.”
Cosby anticipates watching sporting events to support her students.
“I’m really excited to get to go watch sporting events as a way of getting to know them outside of just my student in my classroom,” Cosby said.
Cosby has enjoyed her positive experiences with the students and staff.
“I really enjoy coming to work every day because the other teachers and staff are really nice,” Cosby said. “All the students have been really nice so far.”
Outside of school, Cosby participates in multiple activities with her husband and their friends and being able to spend quality time with them.
“I try to play pickleball sometimes, or my husband and I like to go hang out with friends and do Bible studies with them,” Cosby said. “That’s one of the things that I really enjoy doing is getting to spend quality time with other people.”
