Rapper Kanye West is back after his two-year hiatus following the release of his last album “Donda 2” with yet another album “Vultures l” with fellow rapper Ty Dolla $ign. This album is set to be the first of three albums in the Vultures trilogy.
On this album, West and Dolla $ign have great chemistry, and it is apparent throughout the album. This is most true in the song “Back to Me.” Dolla $ign sings the hook on this song, and his vocals are so clean compared to West’s rough bars, which provides good contrast in the song. West usually comes in and raps the verses in between. Also on this song, rapper Freddy Gibbs provides a strong verse. His verse is fast and powerful and is relentless from start to finish.
Another standout on this album is “Carnival.” This song starts with a powerful chant that continues throughout the song. Rapper Playboy Carti drops a verse, and this feature is not the best. A Carti feature is a common occurrence on this album, he is featured on two songs and they are both mid. When I listen to Carti, I often feel like his rap style is lazy.
West and Dolla $ign are not scared to get into some emotional topics on this album. In the song “Talking”, Dolla $ign talks about his daughter’s coming of age. He explains how nervous he is about the decisions she will make as she gets older. He worries if he was a good enough influence on her and if she will succeed in life.
Although this album has some strong highlights, its lowlights are a little boring. It feels like I am waiting for something to happen, but it is just the same thing over and over again, songs like “Carnival” make up for all the downtime.
Overall this album has some boring moments but also has some of the best rap I have heard so far this year, because of that I’m feeling a 7/10 for this album.
